I doubt this is your problem but we had a 770 Oliver gas that popped when it ran. It turned out to be the key switch, don't know how or why but it was. Am assuming arching in it allowed hotter spark to cause the fluxuation with it running. When I was working in town at an independent shop they had a JD 4020 gas that was doing the same thing. The owner had taken it to the IH dealer first, they couldn't figure anything out. When it was at the shop where I was at the boss had replaced the cap and associated parts, wires, plugs and coil. I told him try replacing the key switch. That was the problem. I have heard that water in the gas can cause popping as well.
