My radiator problems over the years have been caused by lack of air circulation due to clogged air passages. The more rows of tubes the harder it is to see since they stagger them sometimes on the larger units.
I just solved my running warmer than I wanted problem by a thorough investigation of my 7 year old tractor. Sure enough, grass clippings had clogged the fins.
Course on a TO 20 time may be your enemy, especially if you didn't run anti-rust-water pump lube or 50-50 AF in it. Rust scale!
You can test your thermostat in a pot of water on the stove. Water boils at 212F (STP) and a lot of tractor stats start opening at 165. Carefully push the stat open enough to get a string lodged in the sealing area and hang it in the water with a candy thermometer to monitor the water temp. When the stat falls off the string you have your opening temp.
