Wayne, your in depth response certainly raises some very interesting points, if you contemplate the larger picture of all this. It's difficult to encumber all the factors involved given the complicated world we now live in with all the modern conveniences and technology. In short, its a real can of worms LOL !
Hopefully I did not exhibit more of an opinion then observation, meaning some of the things I described above.
I don't know if the air is any cleaner, but I can see farther at least LOL !
Where I live is a busy 2 lane state road and if the wind is just right, moving air slowly, I can smell the vehicle exhaust at times when its busy, I'm 700' feet from the road, and I believe 100' higher in elevation, would have to look at the topography map again.
Whats interesting, in this area, there was a lot of manufacturing and it lingered for quite some time, I even recall seeing common items found in a hardware store, that were actually made right here, that are now exclusive to foreign manufacture, I think I even saw an item in its package on ebay, from an old hardware store, that was labeled as made right here in Troy, N.Y.
The one thing that stands out about the former manufacturing is the noise. I noticed it more when hunting, very early in the morning, during the work week, you would hear the distant sounds, mostly a constant one, of it all combined. Now, you don't hear much of that, something is different and it correlates to the above. I'm comparing the mid 70's, early 80's to now, there was this distant industrial roar, just enough to know it was there. Funny how its all changed.
