Take a test light and hook it to the battery post that goes to the tractor frame then put the test light on the terminal going into the distributor and crank the engine over. The test light should blink off and on as the points open and close. If it stays on the points are not closing if the light doesn't come on it means the points are not opening. We put a new distributor on our neighbor's 8n and we had the same problem you're having it would not fire. We ended up taking the new dist back and ended up paying a 20% restocking fee of $40. Ended up adjusting the points in the old one by bending them to make them contact each other and got it running again.
