I used to love country up to the 80s, and then it just became rock music with a bit of fiddle and steel guitar. The heavy rock beat changed it forever. Grew up on Hee Haw, Loretta, Porter and Dolly, Faron Young, and a bunch or others. Then Waylon and the other "tough guys" came along with more of the hard rock sound. That's my take of the evolution anyway.
It seems like all the male country vocalists have southern drawls. Growing up in Michigan with country folks, country music sounded so southern that we couldn't really relate to it, even though it had a nice sound. I wondered if there was a rule that you couldn't sing country music if you didn't have a southern drawl.
Now it seems that the main theme in country is honky-tonks, which I can't relate to. I listen to bluegrass and southern gospel quartet and love it.
