Yes I have heard mixed reports about Claas tractors. A lot say "If you want to buy a green combine always buy the pale green one with red wheels not the dark green one with yellow wheels!" OK their combines are awesome but the tractors? hmm, they seem to be a mixed bag. Actually some of the Claas tractors use FTP engines... as do the Case IH farmalls! The new generation Perkins engines are not known for their economy really, The one we had in our Matbro Teleram 250 drank like a fish. The story goes that Claas were putting Perkins engines in because they were having problems with Deere engines ( head gaskets etc.) You can't win!
I go back to the glory days before Renault got taken over by Claas, when they used those German MWM engines ( As did Fendt) which were very economical to run, beautifully smooth, hardly ever needed working on and had awesome lugging ability. The 93 hp Renault 103-14 / 54 tractors were just about the best in their class, talk to anyone who ever owned one they had nothing but praise for them . I remember the 80 hp Renault we had made the same h.p. IH that we traded it in for seem like a dinky toy in comparison. Not only that the IH was always going back for repairs.

This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
