Not familiar with the engine turbo setup but if its easy I'd pull the intake tube off the turbo and like others said turn the shaft with fingers and also wiggle side to side and see if the compressor wheel contacts the housing. If it seems ok then start it up and see if it spins.
I guess if the turbo is locked up and/or exhaust turbine is damaged then maybe the engine is not breathing good enough through exhaust to start easily without the need for ether.
If you are making black smoke either the turbo should be singing and making a lot of boost or its not working much at all. Also check turbo plumbing to intake but if it was disconnected the whistle and air noise should be obvious.
