I'm not on 8.1, but try this to see if it works...
Open your trash folder.
Click on the top file to highlight it. Then hold down your SHIFT KEY while you ALSO hold down the DOWN ARROW KEY. That should make it continue to select/highlight files....
Once a bunch are highlighted... then RIGHT CLICK somewhere on the highlighted files
Then on the drop-down menu, choose DELETE
Then click on YES when it asks if you want to delete those files.
This method of highlighting can also be used to select files to either move them or to copy them to another folder as well, (at least in versions prior to 8.1)
