I've been raising sheep for right at 20 years now. Shetlands for years, switched to Katahdins about 3 years ago.
I've heard about every story there is about how dumb sheep are and how they spend all their time looking for a way to die. Hasn't been my experience.
I've lost two to causes never determined over the years, and I've had the occasional ewe drop twins and choose to care for only one of them, but by and large, they've been trouble free. I've bottle fed one and assisted in one birth. The rest of the time it's been "Oh, look, Mary Kate had her lambs!"
Part of that is no doubt because both breeds are considered "primitive" breeds and are selected for ruggedness, easy birthing, good mothering skills and docility.
