Most of the used tire shops around here get their tires from the you-pull-it type salvage yards in the area. They actually send crews of guys to find, retrieve, and dismount the tires from all over the yard. They probably get a bulk price for them, since they are doing the salvage yards a favor by getting rid of the tires for them. There are also a couple of dealers around that go to the bigger tire shops and buy their take-offs. I have seen folks come into a dealership, buy a car, and then have the tires changed to something that they prefer. Saw one guy that bought a car that had Firestone tires on it. He insisted that it had to have Goodyear tires to make the deal. This was a brand new car, and the tires landed in a pile for new car take-offs.
To those that would "never" use a used tire I say why throw away a perfectly good tire? If the tire is in good condition, in date, and has no defects, I would not hesitate to use it. I still remember the brand new steer tires that the boss put on the tractor-trailer that I drove to upstate New York one fine day. The left steer tire shredded halfway to my destination. Being NEW does not necessarily make them GOOD. Being USED does NOT make them BAD or UNSAFE.
