A dealer has to have diversity to survive here. That is true for even John Deere dealers. The single theme dealers all died off some time ago. The local AC dealer was adamant about having few sidelines because combines were selling like hotcakes but then the 1980's came along and derailed that dealer. Grain farming has never been an overwhelming part of business in any area here so a lot of years a dealer is not going to move many planters or combines. I always thought even if I had a Deere dealership I would want significant sidelines if for nothing more than to bring prospects in that would not normally shop a Deere dealership. The chain Case dealer in the past got away with being light on the consumer products because it also held the industrial territories here. The only problem is I don't the industrial business is as healthy as it was a couple of decades ago. Could be why they snapped up Mahindra recently.
