Some quick test. First are the slip rings clean. They are the part that the brushes ride on. They should be a light copper color not dark.Clean them with a plastic dish washing pad or some light sandpaper. But not with anything that has metal in it.
To check the field flash. Put the positive probe from a volt meter. On the F1 brush. The negative probe on the F2 brush. Crank the engine and you should see DC voltage. If not check the wiring.I don't think you have a major problem since you say it does run and produce power.
Dirty slip rings and stuck brushes were a common problem. For units that sat a long time.
I can send you the test sheets. But if you would like a service manual 965-0528. Go over to smokstak request one. Post an email address and one of my guys will send you one for free. I can fix generators but the PDF file stuff. Gives me fits.
