Dave, i grew up in England and learned to drive there, roundabouts everywhere, most now with traffic lights on and off them... massive ones too, maybe a 1/2 acre or more in the middle, they work great until traffic volumes get so high that one road on and off doesn't let other traffic on, hence the traffic lights.
Once people are used to them they are keep traffic moving very well, there should be no need to stop in low traffic situations especially if visibility is good and you can see traffic approaching the roundabout...
on multi lane roundabouts the innermost lane is used for traffic turning left and the outer lanes for the traffic turning right or going straight ahead...
