If an engine develops hard starting from ether - it's from mechanical damage. Not something that's going to get better on its own. I've rebuilt a few Dubuque 300 series John Deere engines that had the pistons completely shatter from using WAY too much ether sprayed into an open air-intake. Had a few others not as bad and just had broken top rings. Just fixed an Allis Chalmers with the same problem.
Ether works fine when used in moderation and on an engine designed for it. Otherwise - sometimes it can spell disaster.
