Without the center mound, speeding/inattentive semi truck drivers sometimes try to jump the curbs and drive straight through the center breaking signs, concrete and springs or axles in the process. It usually happens late at night.
A pit in the center would give much better visibility for everyone, but would also cause more injuries or worse to those still trying to drive through the centers.
