I've been selling wood for 12 years now. Usually do about 18 cord a year. The wood I sell now, was cut last winter, split by June and left on concrete in the sun all summer. Around here wood goes for around $140-$180 a cord depending on the species/quality. I figure by the time I'm done I have about 40 dollars worth of gas/parts into a cord of wood (tractor as skidder, log splitter, pickup etc)I estimate it to be about 5 hours of labor per cord (includes equip. maintenance, delivery etc). So I'm making around $20 per hour on my wood. It can be a simple way to start your own side business if you have access to a lot of trees. Here are some other ideas too. Think moving snow, odd jobs, private hauling (use your pickup) become a scrapper etc.
