The problem was the McCarthy was right about a lot of the accusations he made. Alger Hiss WAS a communist and a spy. There was a whole bunch of paperwork declassified a few years back that proved out much of what McCarthy claimed. There have been books written about it. Look up "Verona Project declassified", see proof that Victor Perlo, Judith Coplon, Morton Sobell, William Perl, Alfred Sarant, Joel Barr, and Harry Gold were all communist party workers. There's a reason all those people took the 5th. Do it the easy way and pick up a copy of Ann Coulters book "Treason". You probably don't like Ann too much, but the facts and footnotes are all there. Even PBS has recognized the facts and has an article on it, although they don't get into McCarthy- http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/venona/intercepts.html
Was McCarthy a great guy? No. Was he a bit of a tool? Yup. Was he wrong? NO! That's the important part Edd. FDR and Truman DID have Soviet spies working in the WH, in the State Dept and elsewhere that were actively working against the US. People want to forget the most of FDR's "Brain Trust" were not only communist sympathizers, but that FDR sent them to Russia to get ideas on how to do things in the US. (They want to gloss over that there was going to be a statue of Mussolini erected in Wash DC too, but that's another story!) FDR and Truman just couldn't believe that the Soviets were that far into the gov't. McCarthy did, he spoke about it and he couldn't release the Verona Intercepts. Smart move on his part? Maybe, maybe not. But history has painted McCarthy unfairly.
