I live in NC where open carry is legal without any kind of license or restriction. I never gave much thought to doing so until a year or so ago when I had a gun pulled on me. Since that day I rarely ever leave home without my pistol by my side. So far I've carried everywhere I go and have only had one person even mention the fact I was carrying, and that was to ask about the gun I had on at the time. I've also got a CC permit and when it makes more sense, or will be more convenient for me to do so, I carry concealed. It also helps during the winter when open carrying as it keeps me legal when I put on a jacket and it instantly becomes concealed. Not to mention I don't have to leave it 'in plain site' when I am carrying it in my vehicle.
Ultimately there are folks that would rather carry concealed, and hide the fact that they are gun owners, and that's one of the hurdles that we face when fighting the anti's as all they usually have to show as examples are a few who do things for the shock value, as opposed to those of us who are simply exercising out rights. That said, the way I see it is that if you have a RIGHT and do not exercise it, then where is the RIGHT? In other words if you don't use it, you don't so much lose it as voluntarily give it up.
In the end I'd love to see more real, everyday folks, like myself, stand up and be proud of the fact they are gun owners and open carry when ever it's legal and possible. I think if we'd all do this the views of the uneducated would have a much better chance of shifting in the face of reality -vs- the fantasy world they are fed by the anti-gun crowd.
