See posts below regarding marco's case with similar problem. Other suggestion is since it is stuck in first gear, don't drive it into the shop unless you have room to turn around. Sounds pretty basic, but it's happened before. Seriously, could be a busted shift fork or a busted detent spring. If you post model #, someone will probably be able to tell you how much work you have ahead of you.
