There is a big cavern for LP southeast of Iowa City as well. It had a fire above ground in the late 80's. It took crews about 3 weeks to put the flame out.
I talked to a guy a couple of months ago who help build it back in the 50's. He said all the dirt and rock had to be taken out the same elevator shaft that they used to go down into it.
He was on the blasting crew.
I can't even imagine working in a cavern 300+ feet below the surface.
