I rented out about 640 acres of pasture for about 10 years ending about 12 years ago, a while before I let my school section land lease go and had a little extra when it used to rain more often. Never had an issue. Standard practice around here is you pay by the head for singles, or by the pair. Half at the beginning of the season, half when they come out. May 15 to Oct. 15 or so. If it gets dry, they go out at a prorated rate for the remainder. Last I heard it was over $400 per pair for a season around here. When I quit I believe it was around $150. They check them and bring "supplies" like salt etc. Corn prices are down and hay prices for ok are still around $90 per ton after the crazy prices they were, so I don't know if it will change. Used to figure 30 pairs per 160 acres here when it was raining, mine would do more than that, but that was a good number for pasture health and then have leftover to clean out with haying.
