What I meant by "this" is what you said about the crank pully/harmonic balancer. The rubber deteriorates and allows movement and will "knock".
I can't recall if the tonewheel for the crank sensor is mounted to the inner or the outer part of the balancer, if on the outer, movement could affect engine timing and performance.
Not gonna come right out and say this is definately your problem but it is a very good possibility.
