Price can be a regional thing. Around here a junky but complete square baler will bring 1500. There's just not many to go around. Plenty of old round balers laying around.
Sounds like the guy is a random moron. Sometimes those types answer your ads. Don't get caught in the moron's world. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. When you're young it seems like every affront is a challenge that needs to be answered. Some people are just loud mouthed and no amount of calling them out will get your point across. Lesson learned; next time you get one like that you'll just ignore it.
If you have a baler just like it that you use then I would just keep the parts you may need and weigh the rest.
