I saw my first one on TV years ago but didn't give it much thought but then in 2010 when our daughter was a senior in Highschool they had one there and I got to see it in action and saw some of the items they had made with it such as a 3" ball bearing. It was fully functional. That and an adjustable wrench. From what I remember it uses what looks like weed eater string sends it thru a heated head melts it and builds the part in layers after the real part has been sent thru a copying machine.
