I don't know about where you are, but where I am, there is a whole book of criminal charges that can be filed. Passing bad checks is a crime. The level of the crime is determined by the size of the check. A large check - like as for the purchase of a tractor - could even be up to a felony. Taking a vehicle unlawfully - in this case by knowingly paying with a bogus check - amounts to theft, perhaps even grand theft. Removing a serial number from a motor vehicle (or any large piece of equipment) is a FEDERAL crime. Might even give some jurisdiction to the FBI or US Marshal service.
Keep in mind that you are dealing with CRIMINALS here. They are not above breaking the law to suit their needs/desires. You need to get some real legal power behind you, and quit tip-toeing around. Get a good prosecutor on your side, hire a good lawyer, and prosecute to the full extent of the law.
At this point, you either fully commit to getting what is due to you or just let it go. There is no longer any halfway.
