If you think defunding the FDA would improve food security in this country, you are delusional. Trusting "good people"? WTF does that mean? The only reason the FDA exists is because "good people" put profits before good food. Look at the history of food production, regulations are a result of bad actors every freaking time!
Please show me where I said anything about defunding the FDA. I'm not seeing that anywhere, because I didn't state that, EVER. For what it's worth, I sure don't think defunding it will help solve any food safety issues. My point was that blindly throwing more power and money to the agency probably wouldn't have stopped that outbreak, probably wouldn't have improved the response, probably wouldn't have saved those 33 lives, and probably won't stop the next outbreak from happening. It's all opinion, though. One way or another, we'll never really know. Those 33 people thought someone had their backs, though. Along with "food safety" issues, look at the list of drugs the FDA approved that were removed from the market in the last 2 or 3 decades and conditions those formerly approved medicines have caused and lives they have negatively effected or ended. I do know putting all of my faith in any government agency to protect my health and well-being is a game of russian roulette I would rather not play.
Also, the FDA also couldn't stop the Chinese from trying to poison the world in the later reference. Nor could they shut the door on Chinese products being shipped here that could potentially produce the same result. Brownie points for trying, though. China is like a h00ker to the world. China may look good at first, the transaction may seem desirable at the given price, but if you keep going to bed with it sooner or later you'll end up with a seriously undesirable problem that you wish you never had to worry about.
I also never said anything about "trusting good people". The FDA and USDA are necessary evils for food, unless you know where your food comes from and how it's handled. The days are over for most people to know where their grub comes from in this country. They know nothing about how it's grown, handled, processed, or anything. Nor do they care to learn. My point about "good people" was that I know people who have quit or reduced acreage of fruit and/or vegetable crops because of FSMA. One switched to row crops. It's just not worth the headache to them anymore.
Seperate from the FDA, another farmer said he's getting out of hogs when his state poo permit comes up for review again. 4 hours a week (and it'll only get worse in coming years) uncompensated for the extra paperwork only on manure is better spent elsewhere.
How many chickens would you shoot to make sure there's no fox in a hen house? The answer at many of the alphabet agencies is all of them, of course. The fox is bad, we can't have a fox in there, gotta get rid of it at all costs. What if there wasn't a fox there to begin with? Well, there's that many less chickens they now have to worry about later. Time to move to the next hen house. Keep assuming they're full of foxes. Same rules apply.
Feel safe today about the domestic food supply? If so, compared to what? Conditions in Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle"? How about imported products? Look at the history of food production elswhere. Do you know the history of food production in China, for example? China's recent history is very disturbing, if not stomach-churning. Check some labels sometime. If product origin is listed at all, it may amaze you where some products originate from. Much food is imported from China, and nobody here or there is checking all of it.
I'm also not delusional, and have no reason to explain my reasoning on that to you. I'm also not going to sink to your level and question your mental state or competency.

Today's Featured Article - Show Coverage: Journey to Ankeny - by Cindy Ladage. We left Illinois on the first day of July and headed north and west for Ankeny, Iowa. Minus two kids, we traveled light with only the youngest in tow. As long as a pool was at the end of our destination she was easy to please unlike the other two who have a multitude of requirements to travel with mom and dad. Amana Colonies served as a respite where we ate a family style lunch that sustained us with more food than could reasonably fit into our ample physiques. The show at Ankeny
