I would just remove the itake valve instead of the spark plug. To remove the piston and rod you have to split the engine off the generator. Once you do that and remove the rod you may not have any oil splash to lube the engine and it will lock up on you and with no rod attached to the crankshaft it will be out of balance and probably knock out your frequency due to constant vibration. IF you remove the engine you just as well put another new engine on it.
Those engine crankshafts have a tapered end on it where the gen head attaches and they can be a bugger to seperate sometimes.
