On the clicking solenoid, as said, check battery cable connections first- buff them up, buff up the point where ground wire is bolted to engine or frame, and try again. If still clicking, take the solenoid off the top of the starter and take it apart- if its a Delco type, there will be a big copper disc that is the contact point, and it can get corroded. Just twist it to a new position where it has new metal to contact, and that may do the trick. Its not a mechanical problem with starter gear if it works properly when jumped.
