Everybody laughed at Honda and Toyota back in the 1970's too including the arrogant brass at GM and Ford.
Well all I can say today is if you want a quality automotive vehicle the choice is clear and the big 3 are not on the list. Japan is leaps and bounds in first place and they even manufacture more stuff in the good ole USA (using good ole USA citizens as workers) than the so called Big 3 domestics do. Heck I would even go Korean before the big 3. Korean manufacturers for the most part have heavily copied the Japanese but they do not manfacture near as much stuff in the USA as the Japanese do. Dad retired from GM so I used to bleed GM blood. When my current POS GM money pit truck is worn out it will be my last GM (or domestic vehicle) that I ever own.
I own a little 1978 Kubota L285. All I have done to it in the 16 years that I have owned is replace both battery cables and replace the battery once (with a used battery at that) and that is it. Laugh all you like.
