: : : : : I'm looking to buy a small (<20HP) garden tractor w/PTO to use primarily to mow less than 1/2 acre, blow snow off a large driveway, light hauling, and perhaps do some tilling. I'm avoiding the newer "Craftsman/MTD/NOMA lawn tractors" and am looking for an older, more heavy duty one. I am looking at primarily Cub Cadets, Bolens, WheelHorse, Simplicity, Gravely and John Deeres. Availability of parts and attachments, in addition to the performance of the tractor is a big factor in the decision. : : : : : Any advice on specific ones to look for or to avoid? : : : : : Any recommendation : : : Kent, : : : I would stay away from the Cub Cadet as they have a poor repair history . The same goes for Bolens. : : : Simplcity is a very good tractor but I have heard that parts are high. The same goes for John Deere. : : : Wheel Horse tractors seem to be very good .Don't know about Gravely.I have used a 1988 Craftsman : : : for some pretty rough mowing . It does not have a PTO though. : : : Good Luck, : : : Ford Man : : I just saw a little MF garden tractor with a tiller on the back and I understand it has a mower deck that goes with it. It's powered by a Briggs 16 (?) hp engine. that's about all I know about the thing. I was thinking about getting it for myself for much the same reasons. Anyone know more? : :A cub would be a nice tractor for you, if you would like a older cub look for a 149 or a 1450 you can attachments like a tiller, snow blower, and mowing decks from 40" to 50". these garden tractors have a 14 hp kohler and are ease to service and parts are avalilable. stay away from anything with a briggs&stratton engine Do not buy a Bolens, Wheelhorse have problems with the belt drive arrangment. If you want simply the best buy an old IH Cub Cadet. Look for one that has been stored inside and owned by a homeowner for mowing the lawn. They are the most expensive older garden tractors for good reason. Parts are easily availible and they are based on sound engineering. I am always looking for old Cub Cadets and they are rarely for sale. Good luck: Mie Dane
