Things haven't changed all that much. I started engineering classes in 1973 with a $30 slide rule ($159 in 2014 dollars). The following year I tried to get by with a simple 5 function calculator (+,-, x, division and square root) for $100 ($479 in 2014 dollars). The next year I needed a more a calculator with trig functions for $150 ($658 in 2014 dollars). If I had bough the trig calculator in 1973 it would have cost $300 which I didn't have ($1590 in 2014 dollars). Today's trig calculators start at around $5. Back then, new text books were $15 to $30 ($79 to $159 in 2014 dollars) used books were about half that but they were only available for the basic classes with higher enrollments.
Other majors could be worse, I suspect $1500 won't go very far today on tools for a mechanic, an electrician or a plumber. Even a good used rolling tool box is still pretty expensive.
What is the cost per credit hour for med school, is that public school or private school?

The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
