Why bother yourself with being mad about not getting the response that you think that you should?? I have done a significant amount of buying and selling on Craigslist, and have been mostly successful. Most of the time, you can tell if a person is legit or just a tire kicker. Whenever one puts $1 in the ad heading, I automatically consider it a bum ad. Nobody is selling their high value item for a DOLLAR. I generally send a polite email and give my cell phone number. If they are interested, and the item is still available, we make contact, and the deal is generally made. I also NEVER answer an ad that contains certain phrases like "no spammers" or "no scammers." The scammers ands spammers are already violating the rules. A feeble warning in a CL ad is not going to alter of otherwise affect their bad behavior.
As far as "protecting" one's phone number, I ask WHY??? I could care less who knows my phone numbers. My land line number is listed in the local directory. I give my cell number to anybody that wants it. I still do some things the old fashioned way - that is - if I don't want to talk to a person, I say so politely, and then hang up. Pestering me repeatedly will get your number blocked. Even the telemarketers will leave you alone once they figure out that you are not buying.
