Well I tried it your way and the way it said in the manual about TDC on compression stroke and all I got was a back fire so I moved the distributor a little one way and then the other way and still won't fire up' I'm baffled now
I have replaced distributors in cars before and it worked out ok but this tractor is a pain in the a??.
Now I have another problem with the tractor' Since I was cranking the motor over with the starter to move it for the compression stroke and check the timing marks several times now I wrecked the starter drive gear and now I have to find one of these for my starter.
