I was razed in Alaska and have lived in Alaska for over 50 years and 90% of that shti on TV about Alaska is just that SHTI! And that kind of hype has killed several people so far. I have a BA in Alaskan History and would have to hit the books to dig any deeper about McCarthy. But how I remember McCarthy' demise was less dramatic but I can see how the wild stories got started. In 1929 J.P. Morgen pulled his support out of the Kennecott Mines (McCarthy) and the miners up and left with wood in the stoves and plates still on the tables - a true ghost town. When the last train/boat left everybody had to be on it. Kennecott was a small dry mining township which was soon dwarfed by McCarthy which allowed alcohol.
In 1964 the big earthquake took out the road and bridges to McCarthy which connected Cordova and the road to Copper Center then on to Valdez. Gov. Walter 'Wally' Hickel attempted to rejuvenate interest in the area but political maneuvering put a nix on that plan. Recent political rumblings have purposed fixing the McCarthy Hwy.
