People like to use stolen credit cards to fill up because nobody asks for your ID or a signature. You just swipe, pump, and drive away. It's the easiest form of credit card fraud.
Some gas stations now ask for a zip code as a security measure. They figure if the card is stolen, the thief probably doesn't know your zip code. This helps keep the rate the credit card companies charge them down. The more insecure the transaction, the more the credit card companies take off the top to cover fraud.
