I have a JD 314 and an old Cadet 782 (17 HP), and both are really good tractors. I bought the Cadet used and I think if they were new I would like it better. My recommendation would be to try and get the Kohler twin cyl, with shaft drive and I prefer Hydrostatic transmission. The twin cylinder engine is smoother. The Hydro lever on the Cadet is shorter and it gives the operator more precise control when changing speeds or direction. Wheel weights and Agricultural tires are nice too. The Cadet has 765 hours and the engine is running fine. JD is a good tractor as are others, but it is low hours so far. Good luck! : I'm looking to buy a small (<20HP) garden tractor w/PTO to use primarily to mow less than 1/2 acre, blow snow off a large driveway, light hauling, and perhaps do some tilling. I'm avoiding the newer "Craftsman/MTD/NOMA lawn tractors" and am looking for an older, more heavy duty one. I am looking at primarily Cub Cadets, Bolens, WheelHorse, Simplicity, Gravely and John Deeres. Availability of parts and attachments, in addition to the performance of the tractor is a big factor in the decision. : Any advice on specific ones to look for or to avoid? : Any recommendation
