This same question has come to me. Since we are talking about the same things, made the same way, doing the same job, just why is heavy oil so important if thin oil can contain the additives to survive the pressure tests and all that ensures oil remains between steel parts under high pressures.
I know my '63 Ford 2000 uses it in the transmission rather than GL-1 gear oil. How do I know that? The transmission keeps filling up and the middle hydraulic sump keeps emptying.
The pipes from the hydraulic pump on the engine go through the bottom of the tranny case (thanks to Soundguy enlightening me), and I apparently have a hole in the high pressure one which he said is a common problem. This has been going on for the 10 or so years I have had the tractor and was that way when I bought it, no telling how long before that it started.
So from a BTDT mentality, I'd put in some JD 303 which is designed for trannys, hydraulics, and differentials (and wet brakes) and be done with it. Additionally, in the winter shifting is nice and smooth.
