Is the overhang on the east side of the barns? The area under the overhang was a storm shelter for horses or dairy cattle. We used to have a long barn with the overhang facing the east, and was concrete to prevent cattle from creating a mud bog. In addition, the oats bins were directly above with wooden grain chutes. We had to take corn and oats to town to get ground and mixed into cow feed. My dad had to shovel all the corn into the truck, but just open the chute for the oats. It was a good design. Once the hay, oats and straw was in the barn, everything was downhill from there.
