First off, you need to get shoes that fit. Most stores only carry D width shoes, so if you don't happen to have D width feet plan on ordering your shoes. Don't let a shoe salesman convince you otherwise.
I'm a fan of Red Wing shoes and boots, but there are other good brands as well. I assume your job requires you to wear steel-toe shoes, so that eliminates walking shoes, which are probably as easy on your feet as they come.
One thing that can make a world of difference is proper socks. I discovered Red Wing's "Merino Hiking Socks" a couple of years ago and that's all I wear now. I bought a pair for my machinist brother-in-law and that's all he wears now, too. They are expensive, about 15 bucks a pair, but well worth it. They outlast cotton socks about 2 to 1, which partially makes up for the difference in price.
