I buried one surrounding a little over 4 acres for my black lab. He didn't like getting shocked, but discovered pretty quick that if he ran fast enough he could get through it without getting zapped. That said, it seemed to work OK unless there was something antagonizing him enough to want to cross it.
I know several of my neighbors have them too, and they seem to work with their dogs. Ultimately I think whether one works or not is about as dependent upon how smart the dog is, as it is anything else.....
