The only thing I can come up with is the chains raise what we call the shields or another poster called them dirt fenders. Come to think of it. I did make a mechanical lift with a hyd cylinder to lift the rotary shields using a rocking shaft chains on one of my cultivators and I have a sneaking suspicion I got the idea from a similar factory setup. It was handy when I was in corn that varied in height quite a bit through the field.
