Well after a lot of head scratching, almost cussing, and trying to figure out what someone else did years ago, I think we got it! Key now shuts off engine, It charges good, no backfeed when shut off, but does show discharge if low speed and lights on. Charges again if you up the rpm a little. No idiot light used, only one terminal on the back of the alternator used for the field to F terminal on regulator. #4 terminal not used on regulator. This is using an external regulator with an amp gauge. Never did find a wiring diagram for that! Went ahead and replaced the temp gauge since we were under the dash anyway. Ol Jeep coming along nicely so far!
