I've got 80 acres of mature sugar maples (hard), red (soft) maples, a few swamp silver maples (soft), and a few Black maples (hard). No way can I tell for sure in the winter which is which unless it's early spring and buds are starting to swell. Bark is not always the same from tree to tree. Of course if you're cutting with a chain saw, you'll know right away if it's a hard Black or Sugar maple.
Tree in these photos is a large Sugar Maple that had a bee hive in it. I cut the bottom off with the active hive right in it and brought the wood and bee colony to a bee guy nearby.
