My uncle would do what he could to back fill any major holes. Never hauled any dirt in. Then he'd plow it. Just deep enough that it'd turn the sod over. Then he plants rye and lets it go. Part way through the summer he'd mow it down with a sickle mower and let it rot there. Plow it again in the spring and put it back to trees, or occasionally alfalfa or corn.
