Up until MTD bought Cub Cadet they were the class of the industry. Even the ones built by Cub when they were alllowed to operate separately from MTD are pretty good. They are still miles ahead of the new ones today. I wouldn't trade my 1970s model 86 (the low end of the line for that time) for any new big box MTD. The 86 is one of the rarer models, with only a little over 5,000 being made over a 4 year production.
That said I have used MTDs for regular mowing duty for many years and have gotten pretty good service for the price, although anything can and does go wrong at any time. My primary now is a Husqvarna with a two cyl. Courage and it's been very good, no issues in two years, and it had 500 hrs. on it when I got it.

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
