I'm just south of Louisville, near Bullitt County and Spencer County line. In recent years, we've seen hottest months and hottest years on record, Coldest days/months/years on record, Driest and wettest months and years on record, highest recorded wind gust's in the area, etc...Still, when it's all said and done, we average very near "average". Louisville has been just about shut down with snow event this week. However, the single day record snowfall was 21 years ago. Record cold was that very same day in '94. Nothing close to those extremes since.
People these days are so caught up in statistics and records that they don't see the big picture. They dwell on isolated instances of weather anomalies rather than long term averages.
That said, last night we smashed all time record low FOR THIS DATE. Today we smash all time record coldest high temp for this date. And tonight we are supposed to smash all time record low for tomorrows date. Then mid 40's and as much as 3" of rain Saturday. It's not so much a story of hot OR cold as it is one of EXTREMES.
