On a 4-cylinder engine, it doesn't make any difference. You can time it so that #1 is the front cylinder, or the rear cylinder.
All you do is put the cylinder on the compression stroke, line up the timing mark on the crank pulley, set the rotor to point to the #1 distributor cap post, and install the spark plug wires in order.
