Also, if his vehicle were to break down somewhere between town and home a cell phone is a far more useful tool unless I am missing something here. If it were really dangerous in terms of two legged varmints I don't think he would fare well against somebody with a gun. Maybe carry dad's gun in dad's truck with the understanding that it STAYS in dad's truck unless he is ambushed by a bear or something similar.
