You need to go over everything very carefully. More than likely you have already done some damage to the gears on the top trans shaft. Careful attention to all shifter parts can make a worn trans go along time before a rebuild.You really should have a Deere Tech manual for your tractor.Make sure all in and out play is eliminated from the shifter shafts on the side of the trans case then inspect shifter arms and rods for wear.Move up to the dash shifter and make sure there is no play anywhere.I would recommend everything new. It will be a fair amount of money but much cheaper than going into the trans.On the side of the trans case there are two plugs that have pointers behind them that hold the internal shifter where it belongs when changing gears,I like to replace the pointers with a ball and retainer that can be found in the late 4230 parts book(Many Deere dealers are aware of this update)You may need different springs as well.The ball fits in the shifter much better than the worn pointers and you can also add a washer or two to put extra pressure on the ball.Make sure all the washers are where they belong in the dash shifter and also check the triangle shaped latch between the two gear shift quadrants for wear.A small amount of slop up top equals a lot down below.Even if you still have to rebuild the trans all these other issuses will have been taken care of.
