I'm assuming this is a Pertronix or similar conversion.
If the black wire went to ground, that would likely cause the module to fail.
There is a requirement of 3.0 ohms or higher resistance across the terminals of the coil. If you don't know what coil you have, you can check it or find someone to check it for you, or replace it with a new one that is of known value.
Running the wrong coil, like a 6 volt coil, or a 12 volt that requires a resistor will stress the module and shorten it's life, and also overheat the coil, especially if the ignition is left on not running.
Those conversions are generally bulletproof, but things can happen. Be sure everything is right and try again. I've never had one fail without a reason.
